An RV and boat storage move-in checklist

Updated October 22, 2026 · For RV and boat storage yards

Most storage problems trace back to move-in: a missing insurance card, a rig longer than the space, a tenant who never got the rules. A short checklist done the same way for every tenant prevents nearly all of them.

Paperwork

  • Signed rental agreement, including rent, due date, late fees and access rules.
  • Proof of insurance on the stored vehicle, if your agreement requires it.
  • Current registration, so you have the owner and plate or hull number on file.
  • Emergency contact.

The vehicle and the space

  • Measure the full length, including tongue, hitch and any bike racks.
  • Confirm the space fits with room to maneuver.
  • Note the vehicle’s condition and take photos at move-in.
  • Check for leaks; many yards don’t allow vehicles that drip fuel or oil.

Access and payment

  1. Assign the space and record the tenant against it.
  2. Set up their individual gate code.
  3. Collect the first month (prorated if mid-month) and any deposit.
  4. Send the tenant how to pay each month and the yard rules.

Clear the waitlist entry

If the tenant came from your waitlist, mark them placed so they don’t get offered another space later.
