Managing gate codes at a storage yard
Updated October 22, 2026 · For RV and boat storage yards
A shared gate code is convenient until a former tenant still has it. If your gate supports individual codes, using them is one of the cheapest security upgrades a storage yard can make.
One code per tenant
Individual codes let you turn off one person’s access without changing everyone else’s. They also give you a record of who came in when, if your gate keeps a log.
Keep the code with the space
Store each tenant’s code next to their space and contact details, not in a separate notebook. When someone calls from the gate saying their code doesn’t work, you can check it in seconds.
Move-outs and late payers
- On move-out, delete the code in the gate system the same day.
- Clear it from your records so it isn’t reused by accident.
- For late payers, follow your rental agreement on suspending access.
- Give the next tenant a new code, never the old one.
Never send codes where they don’t belong
Don’t post codes on public pages or group texts, and don’t put them on payment pages or receipts. Share a code only with the tenant, directly.
